Basil seeds, also known as sabja seeds or tukmaria seeds, are the small black seeds derived from the basil plant, scientifically known as Ocimum basilicum. Although they come from the same plant family as the popular culinary herb basil, basil seeds are different in appearance and culinary usage. Basil seeds are tiny and round with a black outer shell. When soaked in water, they absorb liquid and swell, forming a gel-like outer layer while retaining their crunchiness in the center.
